Framing

This is the first in a series of tutorials on how to frame cross stitch or embroidery works. We start with how to frame your design into an embroidery hoop.

Framing into a hoop

Ensure that your design is placed where you want it to sit in the hoop, then tighten it by pulling the fabric so that the design is flat and taught. Tighten the screw at the top of the hoop to ensure your fabric stays taught.

Once you are happy with the placement, cut the excess fabric from around the back of the hoop.

Neaten off by cutting as close to the hoop as possible.

Take the fabric that you want to use for backing your stitching. I would recommend craft felt or calico (calico used in these photos) but you can try it with most fabrics.

Draw around the hoop to get your outline.

Cut out the backing fabric to size.

Snip around the edge of the fabric so that it will fold over itself when placed in the hoop.

Spread some PVA glue around the inside edge of the hoop.

Place the fabric onto the back of the hoop, being careful not to push the glue onto the stitched fabric.

Smooth down the edges to ensure they are stuck down.

Now admire your backing.
